Overview

Take full control of wanderer spawns in every town

Description

Tired of wanderers being spread thin, locked to the wrong cultures, or cluttering your encyclopedia after you're done with them? WPS Wanderer Controls gives you a full MCM settings panel to manage exactly how many wanderers appear in each town, which cultures and genders are allowed, and how cleanly the mod can be removed.

All settings are live — no restart required.

Features

  • Configurable Count — Set 0–10 wanderers per town. 0 = vanilla behavior, no mod interference
  • Refresh On Visit — Wanderers are reshuffled each time you enter a town
  • One Wanderer Per Culture — Guarantees cultural variety up to your count limit
  • Spawn In Culture Cities — Restricts wanderers to towns that match their home culture (Nord wanderers only in Nord towns, Empire wanderers only in Empire towns, etc.)
  • Culture Filters — Toggle each of the 7 cultures independently: Empire, Sturgia, Aserai, Vlandia, Khuzait, Battania, Nord (Warsails DLC)
  • Gender Filters — Toggle male and/or female wanderers independently
  • Smart Creation — Generates new wanderers if not enough exist in the pool to fill your target count
  • Cleanup On Disable — When count is set back to 0, mod-created wanderers are automatically removed on next load or town entry, keeping your encyclopedia clean. Hired companions are never touched.
  • Full Localization — All messages and MCM settings are translated into 13 languages. Language is selected automatically from your Steam/launcher setting; English is always the fallback.

  • Spawn In Culture Cities — Only allows wanderers in towns that share their culture. Works with all 7 cultures and handles sub-culture variants (Empire West, Empire South, etc.)

Safe Removal (mid-campaign)

This mod is designed to be safely removed at any point in a campaign:

Open MCM and set Wanderers Per Town to 0

Make sure Cleanup Wanderers On Disable is ON

Enter any town — mod-created free wanderers are removed automatically

Save your game, then uninstall the mod

Wanderers you have hired as companions are never removed regardless of settings.

If you remove the mod without completing steps 1–3, generated wanderers remain as world characters and can leave extra encyclopedia entries. Use a backed-up save when changing the mod list.

Compatibility

  • Warsails DLC and its Nord culture are supported.
  • The mod uses campaign behavior rather than direct Harmony patches, but overhauls can still interact if they replace wanderer creation, culture data, or town placement.
  • Unknown culture identifiers use the fallback behavior.
  • Designed to be added to or removed from existing saves when the Safe Removal steps are followed.
  • Potential conflicts:
  • Mods that also dynamically move or replace wanderers in towns may interact with the refresh system. Both mods should still work, but wanderer counts may not be exact.

Known Issues

  • Need help? Open the Nexus Mods Bugs tab and include the game version, mod version, MCM settings, complete load order, and the behavior you saw.

FAQ

Q: Will this work on existing saves?

A: Yes — it can be safely added to an in-progress campaign.

Q: Can I remove it mid-campaign?

A: Yes. Set Wanderers Per Town to 0 and enter a town before uninstalling. See Safe Removal above.

Q: What happens to companions I hired through this mod if I uninstall?

A: Nothing — they are never removed by the cleanup system and remain in your party.

Q: Does it work with the Warsails DLC?

A: Yes. Nord culture is fully supported as a culture filter and with Spawn In Culture Cities.

Q: Does "Spawn In Culture Cities" work with sub-cultures like Empire West / Empire South?

A: Yes. The mod normalizes sub-culture IDs so all Empire variants are treated as Empire.

Q: Can I use just the culture filters without changing the wanderer count?

A: No — filters only apply when count is set to 1 or higher. Setting count to 0 disables all mod behavior.

Q: Will there be conflicts with other wanderer mods?

A: Wanderer-relocation mods may interact with the refresh system because both can change town placement or roster counts. Test the combination on a backed-up save.
